Case Study: Sher Khan, Kabul

From Dependency to Dignity

Life Before Support

For many years, Sher Khan struggled to survive on irregular and hard daily labour using a manual handcart. His income was extremely low and unreliable, averaging around 3,000 AFN (£32) per month, often not enough to meet even basic needs.

Due to financial hardship, he was unable to rent his own home and was living with his wife and two young children in a single room provided by his brother-in-law, who had taken him in out of compassion. Sher Khan was burdened with debt, had no savings, and could not afford medical treatment for sick family members. The constant pressure caused deep emotional stress and instability within the family.

At this stage, short-term aid such as food parcels or cash assistance would only have offered limited and temporary relief, without addressing the root cause of his poverty.

The Support Provided

Following a needs assessment and verification process, Sher Khan was supported with a motor-cargo vehicle (Zarang), accompanied by training, mentoring, and structured ongoing support, as part of a long-term approach focused on building sustainable livelihoods and lasting independence.

Rather than treating income generation as a one-off intervention, Amanah Global Relief provides continued follow-up for up to six months, supporting beneficiaries as they establish reliable income, overcome challenges, and progress towards long-term economic independence.

Life After Support

The impact was immediate and life-changing.

Sher Khan’s monthly income increased from approximately 3,000 AFN (£32) to around 35,000 AFN (£392) more than a tenfold increase in his earnings.
Before receiving support, Sher Khan was living in a single room provided by his brother-in-law, relying on sympathy rather than stability. With a wife and two children depending on him, he was unable to fulfil his role as a provider and protector for his family. Although this temporary arrangement was offered with kindness, it placed immense strain on his dignity, confidence, and sense of responsibility.

With a stable and reliable income, Sher Khan has now moved from that single room into a rented home of his own. He is once again able to provide for, protect, and support his wife and children, restoring privacy, independence, and stability for his family.

With this sustained increase in income:

  • Sher Khan has repaid most of his debts and continues settling the remainder
  • He is now able to meet daily household needs consistently
  • Plan small trading activities
  • Provide education for his children
  • He is able to save, plan, and think beyond day to day survival
  • The constant stress and anxiety that once defined his life have reduced significantly
  • Support others in need within his community

One of the most emotional moments for Sher Khan was the day he brought the motor-cargo vehicle home. He described it as “like Eid”, a moment of dignity, hope, and relief after years of hardship.
